Classification of roads in Spain

  • Autopista is a motorway. Marked with an A or E prefix to road number, these are often toll roads. The maximum speed limit on these roads is 120 km/h.
  • Autovia is a dual carriageway, not necessarily with a central reservation. The speed limit on these roads varies from 80 to 110 km/h, therefore it is important to watch the signs.
  • Carretera National is a national highway. The prefix for these roads is either N or CN before the road number. The speed limit on these roads is generally between 60 an 100 km/h.
  • Carretera Local is a local highway. The maximum speed on these roads is 100 km/h. Some have lower speed limits, so always look for signs.
  • Carretera Camarcal is a country road. The prefix C is used before the road number. The speed limit on these roads is usually between 80 and 100 km/h.
