Requirements
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Seatbelts are mandatory. Anyone caught traveling in a car without wearing a seatbelt can be fined up to $500. Children should always use a child seat. Children 12 years and below should travel in the backseat at all times.

Rules of the Road
Some provinces require drivers to keep their vehicles’ headlights on during the day. Rush hour in major city centres is 15:30 – 19:00 hrs. Travelers should be cautious of deer, elk and moose while driving at night in rural areas. Winter travel can be dangerous due to heavy snowfalls and hazardous icy conditions.

Speed Limits
Speed limits in Canada are as follows: City - 31mph/50kph, Open Roads - 50mph/80kph, Highways - 62mph/100kph.

Tolls
Some of the major highways are toll roads but most are free.

Parking
Metered parking is available to motorists and needs to be paid for the whole duration of the stay. Parking spaces are generally free on Sundays, Public holidays and out of business hours. Make sure to check the meter for confirmation of hours.
